DEUTSCH, IMMANUEL OSCAR MENAHEM (1829 1873), German orientalist, was born of Jewish extraction at Neisse on Oct. 28, 1829. His studies at the University of Berlin made him an excellent Hebrew and classical scholar, and in 1855 he be came assistant in the British Museum library. He worked intensely on the Talmud and contributed more than•190 papers to Cham bers's Encyclopaedia. His famous article on the Talmud in the Quarterly Review for Oct. 1867 was translated into many Euro pean languages. He died at Alexandria on May 12, 1873. His Literary Remains were edited by Lady Strangford in 1874.
