DIPPEL, JOHANN KONRAD , German theologian and alchemist, son of a Lutheran pastor, was born near Darmstadt on Aug. 1 o, 16 7 3. He studied theology at Giessen, and then pharmacy and medicine, taking his M.D. degree at Leyden in 1711. He discovered Prussian blue, and by the de structive distillation of bones prepared Dippel's animal oil. Dip pel was one of the most learned men of his time. He died near Berleburg on April having practised at Amsterdam as a physician and afterwards at the Court of Sweden.
