DENT, JOHN CHARLES Canadian jour nalist and historian, was born at Kendal, England. He was educated in Canada, being called to the bar in 1865. After writing for the English Daily Telegraph and then for certain Boston newspapers, he joined the editorial staff of the Toronto Globe in 187o. Later he turned to history, producing The Canadian Por trait Gallery (biographical studies, 187o), Canada since the Union of 1841 (1881), Rev. Henry Scadding (1884) and The Upper Canada Rebellion (1885).
