DOBRIZHOFFER, MARTIN Austrian Roman Catholic missionary, was born at Gratz, in Styria. He joined the Jesuits in 1736, and in 1749 proceeded to Paraguay, where for 18 years he worked among the Guaranis and the Abipones. Returning to Europe on the expulsion of the Jesuits from South America, he settled at Vienna, obtained the friend ship of Maria Theresa, and composed the history of his mission entitled Historia de Abiponibus, Equestri Bellicosaque Para guariae Natione, etc., 3 vols. (Vienna, 1783). In 1822 there appeared in London an anonymous translation really by Sara Coleridge. Dobrizhoffer died on July 17, 1791.
