DIESEL, RUDOLF ), German engineer, was born in Paris on March 18, 1858. His principal achievement was the invention of the Diesel oil engine (see INTERNAL COMBUS TION ENGINE; MARINE ENGINEERING), though he did not live to see its possibilities fully exploited. He fell overboard the Antwerp Harwich mail steamer on the night of Sept. 3o, 1913.
