EFFLORESCENCE, the evaporation of water of crystalliza tion from a hydrate (q.v.) when it is exposed to ordinary air at ordinary temperatures; e.g., washing soda loses part of its water of crystallization and forms a lower hydrate, as is shown by the powdery appearance of its surface.
