ELEUTS. The western Mongols, certain of whom are called Kalmucks by their neighbours, although this term has been very loosely used, were called Urat by the Manchus, U-lat by the Chinese, and in western languages, through the Russian this term became Eleut. Some of them, notably the Torgots (Torgod) have migrated as far west as the Volga, whence they returned, and to day their descendants are settled in the Ili district. Their culture and relationships are discussed in MONGOLIA : Ethnology, of which group they form an important part.
