ELIZABETH ), Queen Consort of England, was born on August 4, 1900. She is the youngest of three daughters of the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, descendant of Robert Bruce, whose castle at Glamis in Scotland is mentioned by Shake speare in Macbeth. On April 26, 1923, she married Albert, Duke of York, second son of King George V. The ceremony was performed in Westminster Abbey and "the smiling Duchess" immediately captured the hearts of the British people. In December 1936, on the abdication of Edward VIII. (q.v.) and the accession of her husband as George VI. (q.v.), Elizabeth became Queen Consort, being the third of her name to fill that position in English history. Her two daughters are the princesses Elizabeth Alexandra Mary, heiress presumptive to the throne, born April 21, 1926, and Margaret Rose, born August 21, 1930.
