FARR, WILLIAM (1807-5883), English statistician, was born at Kenley, in Shropshire, on Nov. 30, 1807. He studied medicine in Paris and London, but only practised for five years. In 1837 he obtained a post in the registrar-general's office. For the censuses of x851 and 1861 he acted as assistant-commissioner; for that of 1871 he was a commissioner, and he wrote the greater part of the reports of a11. He resigned in 1879 on failing to obtain the post of registrar-general. He died on April 14, 1883. He was the author of many papers on general statistics and on life-tables for insurance. A selection from his statistical writings was published in 1885 under the editorship of Mr. Noel Humphreys.
