FREEHOLD, in English and American law of real property, an estate in land, not being less than an estate for life (see Es TATE) . The term customary freeholds was applied to a kind of copyhold tenure in the north of England, viz., tenure by copy of court-roll, but at the will of the lord. These were abolished by the Law of Property Acts 1922 and 1925.
