GAGE, a pledge, something deposited as security for the per formance of an agreement. A particular form of "gage" was the glove or gauntlet thrown down as a challenge to a combat, and as a "pledge" that the parties would appear on the field ; hence the common phrase "to throw down the gage of defiance" for any challenge.
