ALTERNATE-LEAVED DOGWOOD (Cornza alternifolia, Linn.) 15 to N feet. A small tree or shrub with low, round head made of layers of horizontal branches. Bark smooth, reddish brown; twigs reddish green. Wood heavy, hard, fine textured, brown. Buds pale brown, acute, scaly. Leaves alternate S to 5 inches long, oval, pointed, entire, whitish beneath, on slim petioles. Flowers in May, creamy white, small, in flat
cymes, 11 to 3 inches across, on short lateral branches. Fruits October, dark blue, berry-like, a inch across, on red peduncles; nutlets 1 to 2, grooved. Dist.: Moist, well-drained soil. Nova Scotia to Minnesota; south to Georgia and Alabama Handsome ornamental tree.
