Green Ash

GREEN ASH (Fraxinua lanceolata, Borkh.). 50 to 60 feet. Round-headed tree, with slender, spreading branches; twigs gray. Bark gray, regularly furrowed; branches smooth. Wood heavy, hard, strong, brown, coarse-grained, used as white ash, but inferior. Leaves smooth, green on both sides. lustrous above, of 5 to 9 leaflets, each narrowly ovate, taper ing, sharply serrate, on short stalks. Flowers before leaves.

dicecious. Fruit slender-seeded, with narrow wing more than I inch long. Dist.: Commonest from Rockies through Mis sissippi Basin. Important shade tree. Dakota to Texas. Hare from Lake Champlain to Florida
