HOARY ALDER; SPECKLED ALDER (Alnus incana, Willd.). Shrub to e0 feet. Shrubby tree forming copses in wet ground. Distinguished by white spots that blotch the bark. Leaves ovate, strongly veined with straight ribs, dark green, lined with hoary bloom. Flowers in catkins, moncecious, clustered near ends of twigs. Fruit oval cones, inch long, scales spreading to liberate the winged seeds. Dist.: Woodlands, Eastern States.
