A Not-So-Subtle Release

Since its release yesterday, our brand-new theme called Subtle has been downloaded 228 times. Not bad for one day. Of course, with so many copies of it out there, I’m sure people are finding bugs and problems (or missing features) at a good rate too. After this weekend I’ll be giving Subtle it’s own page under downloads, but until then feel free to use this post as a way to report bugs, pass on suggestions, or just talk about your experience with the theme.

I’m also including, with this post, a basic header creation template (download: subtle_header.zip) for Photoshop. If anyone has any suggestions for how to make the manual header creation process simpler (I’m already planning on adding automatic header creation using the WP admin), then pass on your tips!

EDIT: Fixed the link to the Photoshop file.

Subtle_header.zip seems to be corrupt.

Nice theme.

Koray - I fixed the link, so it should work correctly now. Thanks for the heads-up.

Hello, I am giving a makeover to my site and I found this great theme of yours. I do have a problem though, that is I don’t see anything in the home page’s sidebar aside from the description I put it.

In your home page you have readers’ comments and other stuff, how do I add those in? And do I have a version of WordPress with widget support to do that? I was gonna add the stuff myself, but when I went into the template editor I couldn’t find much to edit…

I thank you in advance for your help. The site I am working on is this one: http://thinkcreation.net/italiano

Also in the “current theme” options there is a drop down menu for the theme’s styles. I can’t find them here, are there any yet?

Sorry I forgot one thing: there is no blogroll, is that right?

Elisabetta - I built the theme to use WordPress Widgets - a plugin that makes adding and moving sidebar components a snap. Because I did this (and assumed others would too) I didn’t put in any default sidebar elements. This obviously was a mistake, and I’ll be adding some basic sidebar functionality soon. That said, I would definitely suggest you get your hands on the Widgets plugin and try it out.

Thank you very much for your quick answer. I shall follow your suggestion :)
And thanks for the link too, I really appreciate it.

OK it works very well. Just one thing: there is a bullet in front the “Links” title itself, could that be fixed? Here, look: http://thinkcreation.net/blog/

Elisabetta - I just added “Support styling for all built-in widgets” to my buglist, so I’ll see about taking care of the bullet. I’m trying for another release on Sunday or Monday, and I think I’ll be able to get that into the update.

wonderful theme. seems a bit heavy though?

How big is it when it is loaded in the browser?

I’ll be waiting some of your updates, and will customize it to my needs.

I don’t use widgets but i choose to do it manually myself. when widgets are active, can i put anything to any of the two columns ? what if that plugin does not support widgets?

Alper - it’s funny you should mention that. The core theme files are what you might call, svelt. 22K total for the images. Now… when you get into the user styles, then yes, things can get out of hand. Weighing in at 178K, there’s probably room for compression with the JPGs. In the next update I’ll see what I can do to get that more in line with reality.

But you know, although the images are pretty small, each http request makes it slower.
I loved the theme and I’ll wait for some more updates because I’ll translate it and customize it, etc.
In the style file, I saw that it calls two other css files. That can also slow down the load time. Instead of dividing them, I guess you should mix them up.
After all, you are the expert here, not I.

I am looking forward to use this!

Very nice theme !
Congrats ;)

I just love this design!

Thanks so much for all of the kind words and helpful comments!
