New Style - Apart for Subtle 0.3

Screenshot - ApartWhen I started working on Subtle, I knew that I wanted to build some diverse designs off of it, but until today I only had rough sketches and ideas. One of those ideas was to see how close I could get to one of my favorite sites, A List Apart. Call it a case of imitation being the sincerest form of plagiary, or just call it subtle flattery. Whatever you do, don’t call it plain.

To install Apart, just download the archive, unzip it and then put the archive’s contents in the /styles/ folder for Subtle. Then go to your Current Theme Options page in the dashboard and select Apart, and save. That’s it. Have fun!

EDIT: For those interested in a demo, the Development Blog will run the Apart style until  Friday, July 28.

I really love this theme but am having 2 problems.

1.I cannot seem to properly get a border around my images that displays in both Firefox and IE.It looks fine in Firfox but in IE, it is just the border, no padding or anything.

I do this often so I am confused as to why I cannot get it to work with this theme.I am using the code below
—————–
img {
margin: 5px;
padding: 10px;
border: solid black 1px
}
———————

Also, when I include the name of my categories seperated by a comma, my front page goes blank and I get an error saying what I am looking for is not here.

Any help in getting these problems fixed would be most appreciated :)
Thank you :)

The right part is not very useful!

Shawna - You’ve discovered a quirk between the way FF and IE handle IMG tags. FF treats your IMG tag as a container, allowing it to have a padding value, whereas IE treats it as just an image, which would have no padding. You can try your code out on anywhere else and you’ll see the same results, not just in this theme.

The BEST way to handle the issue is to use some good-old XHTML to make it work. Stick your image in an anchor (you can ommit the href if you want) and give the anchor a class of “image”. Then use the following code:

.image {
margin: 5px;
padding: 10px;
border: solid black 1px;
}

In the end this will give you more flexability and will render correctly across the board. Good luck!

ACMiler - get your hands on widgets for WordPress. I think you’ll find that the right side becomes much more useful then. :)

Okay, I have one last question :)
How do I add a previous and next entries link at the bottom.I have also tried this several ways but cannot get it to show right under the last post or it shows in the wrong place and gives me errors.

Thanks :D

This is great..well done. Unfortunatly, I’m having some issues with the layout of the page. Instead of the width of the layout filling the browser window, I’m still getting the dimensions of the default style of Subtle…see my site to see what I mean. Any ideas?

Nevermind…I didn’t see that version0.3 had come out. Just updated that and away we go.

Help try to change the header image in Subtle 0.3 and get this error:

Shawna - on which page are you trying to add the links?

Allyn - thanks for the bug report! Glad it’s working.

Andy Brough - Looks like you’re getting problems with GD being able to read from your temporary folder. Is this your own computer or are your getting your blog hosted?

Its hosted by Supanames.co.uk so maybe I need to allow the temp folder to be writable?

Hi Christopher :) I was trying ato add it to the index page and finally figured it out :)
I keep saying one last question, and then asking another.I do think this will be the last one though.

How do I add the word “Calendar” above the calendar in the sidebar? It looks odd not to have a title for it, like the rest of the sidebar items have.

Thank you :)

Love the theme, using aprt right now. I could use some help with how the side bar displays in IE…I added links to sidebar cause i didn’t like the look of the widgets links. Anyways, please look at how it shows up in Ie(Firefox is fine). I want to widen the size of the sidebar so the links are on one line. Also text size for sidebar on about page is diff from other pages in IE???

Thanks for any help!!!

Nevermind….I should have noticed the apart css. Anyways, great theme!

Ok…two more quick questions. still can’t figure out why the text for sidebar is different in IE (fine in FF) for just the “About page”.

And how can i make the text in the comment box bigger? It’s hard to read what you’re typing.

Thanks to anyone who can help

Having a problem with the template.
When I upload it into my templates folder the theme does not appear in the ‘presentation’ area of WP admin.
Nothing is there, is it the ways it is .zipped?
Any help would ne great.

Hi, I just started here at WordPress and I am pretty techno-challenged, so please excuse if my terminology makes no sense. My husband set me up with Subtle, but I don’t know what version. I just wanted to tell you that there is a typo in the default sidebar that is titled, “Welcome to . . . . .” There’s a sentence that includes the phrase “take a peak,” which should be “take a peek.” (Verb, to view, rather than noun, something pointy.) I know most people don’t care about this kind of thing, but your design is so nice I figured you are pretty detail-oriented and would want to know.

Kiley - Apart isn’t a stand-alone theme, it’s a style for Subtle. Once you’ve got Subtle working, you can then copy the unzipped contents of Apart (which should all be in an Apart folder) in the /gluedideas_subtle/styles/ folder. You can select Theme Styles from within the Current Theme Options page.

Rachel - THANKS!!! I’ll get that typo fixed in 0.32 - which should be out next week. Good luck with blogging!

Some observations:

The theme doesn’t print very well, often the “Write a Comment” box lies over the “Information and Links” box when printing.

Also, how about an option for variable widths. Right now the theme gets cut on an 800×600px display.

Abid - thanks for the heads up. It’s really very messed up, so I’m wondering if a completely different set print rules might help?

Probably. The comment box could be hidden in the print stylesheet, so you wouldn’t have to work much on the javascript.

I think you have a great visual design here. I plan to modify it to suit a blog for my newswriter uncle (kaleemomar.com) once you have a “stable” release.

Some ideas I have include:

a narrower “Information and Links” sidebar, possibly single column (maybe as an editble theme option).
wigetize the sidebar
setting the width so it displays reasonably at 800×600px (too many people I know use 17 inch screens set at that resolution!).

Abid - I think that’s what I’ll end up doing.

You know that the theme is already widgetized, right? 0.31 provides 3 different widget sidebar locations and 0.32 provides 7!

As far as single column goes, look in the comments for some CSS I gave “Mike” - that will do the trick. Also, version 0.21 and earlier work great for 800×600.

Ok, thanks for the feedback.

Is 0.32 available for download? I have 0.31, and the “Information and Links” side bar in the individual posts is not wigetized.

This theme is great but can you make subtle a 2 column theme?

I really love your theme. I am new to wordpress and have not html or css knowledge whatsoever so I am still learning. You have no idea how many days and hours I had search to find that “perfect” theme for my page and then I found yours.. and my search is over. But since I am so ignorant I don’t know where to find in your page any FAQ or a help and support page. I checked out the comments but I still couldn’t find any answers.
First request: I wanted to put a next page link at the bottom of my main page. How do I do that? Second: I was able to successfully make the Flickr Feeder widget work but I can’t seem to reduce the size of the pictures and the polaroid thingy is not appearing and they are overlapping my margin. Also how do I make those texts above the photos not to appear instead just the pictures like how it shows in your wife’s blog. I love her blog! Third: How do I change the little green “I” icon on the right side?

Sorry this is long.. Thanks very much!

loving this theme right now and using it on my personal blog with a different header, will be modding some more but a great looking pro theme for me !

Thanks

Ade

OK, also ported the theme over to my other busier blog at buzzsonic.com but having some PHP probs when you click on any of the archives(category) links just getting error codes. Something wrong with the search which is a shame as the site looks excellent and thje sharpest its been. Was trying out Hemmingway, Semiologic and Durable themes before this one but this is hands down the neatest looking so far!

Any ideas on the errors anyone?

Thanks in advance

Ade

Oops. Just took a look in IE7 and the site that looks fine in Firefox is all over the place ! Think I’m going to have to dump that text box, top right too. Was trying to cut and paste the code from a YouTube.com video clip (like it works fine at floorelevators.com) but it pushed everything out of whack. Another downer. Could be the side box.

Back to the drawing board!

Ade

OK. In IE you have to watch the width of any images you ad to a post as it pushes the stylesheet out.
In Firefox the larger images get pushed lower (below the text box, top right) and it doesn’t push everything out other than just the image lower so doesn’t break the layout. Image width limit as far as I can see is probably something less than 400 pixels, possibly closer to 380.

Ade

Manas - we’ve actually posted some CSS in the comments that makes it work as a two column design. We might also release a Theme Style that is two column as well, just for fun. We’ll see.

Melanie - 1) I’ll add that to my list of things to work on. 2) Looks like you got it working. 3) Not sure what you’re referring to.

Adrian - I haven’t actually tried out really big images yet, since I tend to resize my images to fit. I’ll take a look at how it formats. Thanks for the compliments and hopefully we’ll get it working for ya.

I forgot to ask you one more question.
Can you make Subtle be compatible with AJAX Comments Plugin? I think its really a great idea to have AJAX Commenting in this theme!

Osuns - Great suggestion! It’s probably going to need to come from the community, though, since I’ve hit crunch time for our big project. Ask around on the support forums and see if someone wants to help put it together. I’m more than willing to add it to the release version of the code, and attribute the work to the authors. :)

Nice work!
