Whubba, Wah?!?

After months of laying low, I think it’s time to finally update the site and get things rolling again for both Subtle and Flickr Feeder. You’ll notice a few big changes around here, and I’d love to hear what you think. I’m sure you have questions, so here are a few some of you might be asking:

What Happened to Glued Ideas?

After about two years of working on this great project, many personnel changes and long nights, it hit us that Glue (the product we were working so hard on) was going to have to take a back seat to other careers, passions and interests. The corporation was dissolved, the lawyers were paid and now we’re off to all new wonderful adventures.

What About the Forums?

You mean the automatic spam catcher? The forums were so overrun with Spam that I realized it would take more time than I had to fix it. I’m more than willing to put something back up once I get the whole Spam issue worked out. Until then, feel free to comment via the blog and send questions via e-mail.

What’s Going On With Subtle?

Obviously, development has continued through the very involved and helpful Subtle community, but official releases have stopped. I’ve been talking to some of the more involved community members who have already provided bug fixes and edits to help out with working on Subtle 0.4, which I’m expecting to be a pretty significant release when it gets going. I’ve moved the Subtle repositories to SourceForge, started taking notes on what I’d like to see, and so development just might get going again before too long. Keep checking back here for updates on that front.

Thanks to everyone for supporting Subtle for all this time! It’s a fun project, and I look forward to hearing from you, the users.

Hi. I recently installed the subtle theme and I can’t figure out how to make certain things appear on the front page like Blogroll and Recent Comments. It seems like it would be easy to do, and the Subtle theme seems to be the only one I’ve used where it isn’t an option to turn on and off.

Thanks in advance!

By the way, I love this theme.

Steven - Subtle uses Widgets for those kinds of things. The best widget plugin right now is Sidebar Modules. Check it out.

Also - thanks! I’m glad it’s working for you.

Hi,

I think I made some rather useful improvements to the Subtle theme. I had some postings on a couple of the issues fixed in the old board. However, I’d be happy to contribute these directly to the project.

Could you post the link to the Sourceforge project and therefore to the SVN repository for the theme?

Cheers,
Torben

Torben - I added a link to SourceForge in the article. Thanks for pointing that out. I’ll contact you about your updates and see if we can get them into the repository.

Hi All.

I love this theme, and spent the last two days tweaking it. I briefly noticed the forums the other day and thought, Great! I will pop back there when I get stuck.. so today I was an oh My, new look to the site (which looks cool by the way) and no forum:o Though I can understand why.

I was actually wanting to know how to remove the find it search thing that appears on some of the pages, can i just delete or comment out the code?

And as a side note, it would be great if there was a way to implement a login box in the welcome bit on the fron page.

Anyway, I love it!. I just tried to download the new version but I’m not sure if the link is working as nothing happened.

Regards

M

Martin - thanks for the input. I think I’ll spend some time in the next few days getting the forums cleaned out so that people looking for help will be able to find it. Also, the link on the front page has been fixed. Thanks for the heads-up on that.

Regarding the “Find This” section:

  1. Find the default.css file for the “theme style” you’re using. If you’re using the default theme style, it should be in “/gluedideas_subtle/styles/default/default.css”
  2. Add to the end of the file:
    #search_box {display: none;}
  3. Save default.css and reload your page. You should now have a search-box-free header.

I’m sad at the changes - but I can relate to that “competing-life-issues” thing. I love the theme - and only have 1 question/comment…
The THEME, OPTIONS, admin page has a text box to indicate which Categories you want listed on the home blog page. When I enter more than a single category, I get “nothing here” in the home page. Is there an easy way for you to fix this? Or is it easier for me to just add some code to “the loop” to indicate the (2) categories that I wish to show?
Sorry for the trouble…

Hi Christopher,

Thanks for such a speedy reply..

yea, I love the simplicity of this site at the moment, there’s just something very relaxing about it:)

I’m not sure if your talking about the same search box, the one in the header is fine. The one I want to change is the one that appears on a grey background on some of the pages, with a huge icon of a spy glass on it. I would like to keep the grey box, and maybe have some text there but just loose the search feature.

Out of over 1000 themes Yours if definitly tops..

Hi Chris,

Thank you for creating such a beautiful theme. I tweaked a few things and our web site at http://www.osgv.org/ went online a few days ago and people loved it!

Society for Sustainable Mobility creates open source cars for the benefits of the public. I guess we are not so different after all.

Thanks again and please check out our site at your leisure. Comments are always welcomed.

Greg - if anything, I’ll have more time for Subtle, so that’s a good thing. About the bug - you’ve caught one of the big ones that’s been left unfix for a while. I’ve added a tracker of it.

Martin - gotcha. The easiest way to change what’s in there is to edit search.php from lines 92 to 96. I wouldn’t normally suggest editing those files, but you’ll get the results you need quickly.

SBM good stuff,
thanks Chris

Chris,

I think that it is a great idea to put Subtle on SorceForge is a great idea. And my guess is after a short while, Suble would be one the greatest wordpress themes. It should since you guys have made us a very awesome base project :)
Cheers

Hi Chris,

did you have the time to go through the modifications to Subtle I sent you some time ago?

Cheers,
Torben
