Politically the State has divided between the Republicans and Democrats, each party giving an almost equal number of gover nors. Only twice before 1932 did the State vote for a Democratic president. In that year and again in 1936 Oregon returned Roose velt and the Democrats. The Bonneville Dam, Columbia river, was started in 1935 as part of the public works program.
