GOVERNOR (gilv'Ern-iir), the translation ot several different Hebrew and Greek words.

1. Al-loof' (Heb.1*, gentle, familiar), the 'chief' of a tribe or family (Ex. xviii:2t ; Num. i:i6; Gen. xxxiv, 'Dukes' of Edom).

2. Kho-kake' (Heb. 1711, Judg. v:9), and Nekh o-kake'oieb.177.'.1, Judg. v:14), denotes a ruler in his capacity of lawgiver and dispenser of justice (Gen. xlix:to; Prov. viii:15; comp. Judg. v:14 with Is. x:1).

3. Mo'shel (Heb. 7F=, having dominion), a ruler having power over property and person (Josh. xii:2; Ps. CV:20; Gen. xxiv:2; xlv:8, 26; 2 Chron. xxiii:2o).

4. Naw-gheed' (Heb. a commander), sig nifies the King.as a military and civil chief (2 Sam. v:2; vi:21; Chron. XXIX:22; 2 Citron. xxxii-21, xix:tt; Kings iv:6, xviii:3, etc.).

5. Naw-see' (Heb. an exalted one), the head or chief of a tribe as (Gen. xvii:2o; Num. ii:3, etc.).

6. Peh-khaw' (Heb. 71'7;7, a petty chieftain, Kings x:t5; 2 Citron. ix:t4, etc.).

7. Paw-keed' (Heb.17, one who held an office by appointment, Gen. xli:34; Judg. ix:28; 2 Chron. xxiv:i i; xi:14, 22; 2 Kings xxv:19; Jer. lii:25).

8. Shal-leet (Heb. a man of authority, Gen. xlii:6; Dan. ii:15; v:29).

9. Sar (Heb.-V , a chief in any capacity, Gen.

xxi:22; Kings xviay, xi:24, etc.).

10. Eth-nar'khace (Gr. 10vdpxns, 2 Cor. xi:32), an officer of high rank.

12. Oy-kon-om'os (oiKovolhos), Gal. iv:2, a steward.

13. Ar-khee-tree' klee-nos (Gr. dpv-rpficXtpos, John a governor of the feast.

14. Yoo-thoo'none (Gr. etWpwp, one leading, a guide). "[The ships] are turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth (Jas. iii:4). In this passage the word governor means a fidot, the man at the helm who governs the ship.
