Heaviness Heavy

kings, prov and glad

HEAVY, HEAVINESS ( h6v'T-n6s), (Ifeb. kaw-bade', weight).

Many other words are thus translated. Heavi ness occurs often, but always with the meaning of grief. Thus (Prov. x:1) 'A wise son maketh a glad father; but a foolislt son is the heaviness of his mother;' (Prov. xii :25) 'Heaviness in the heart of man makcth it stoop; but a good word maketh it glad;' (Is. lxi :3) 'To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness.' 'Ye are in heaviness,' R. V. 'Ye have been put to grief' (1 Pct. i :6) ; 'For he longed after you all, and was full of heaviness', danAopap, R. V., 'Was sore troubled' (Phil. ii:26). In their preface the A. V. translators say of the Scriptures, 'If we be ignorant, they will instruct us; if out of the way, they will bring us home; if out of order, they will reforine us; if in heaviness, comfort us; if dull, quicken us; if colde, inflame us.' The older versions have the word very often, as John xvi:6 Wycliffe's V., 'sorwe, or heuynesse, hath fulfillid

youre herte;' Ps. xxx:5 Coverdale's V., 'Hevy nesse maye well endure for a night, but joye commeth in the mornynge." FiguratiVe. We learn from the preceding pas sages that whatever is burdensome or afflicting to body or mind, is called heavy. 0) As the hand or judgments of God (I Sam. v:6). (2) :In oppressive fax (Neh. v :18; Kings xii:4)• (3) Bad news (1 Kings xiv :6). (4) And the outrageous wrath of a foolish man (Prov. xxvii: 3). (5) A lzeart is heavy, when it is sad and dis pleased (i Kings xxi :4). (6) Eyes are heavy when they can scarce look up for drowsiness (Matt. xxvi :43). (7) Ears arc heavy, when men are dull and inattentive (Is. vi :to). (8) Hands are heavy, when one is wearied with holding them up (Exod. xvii :12). (9) Christ was very heavy, when his spirit was oppressed and filled with sorrow under the unspeakable pressure of his Father's wrath (Matt. xxvi:37).
