BENEDICT, Sir Julius, a musician and composer. German by birth, but, since 1836, resident in England. He was born at Stuttgart in 1803. and stlidi^t1 first under Hummel at ‘Veimar, and afterwards under Weber at Dresden. On Web er's recommendation, lie was, in 1824, made music director of the Karnther Thor theater, Vienna; and he after wards filled the same post in Naples. While in Naples, he produced an opera buffa called Gracirks et Ernesto, and an opera seria, I Portogesi a Goa. In Paris. and after: wards (1835) in London, he appeared with great success as a pianist. In 1836, he took up his permanent residence in London; and was, during that year, director of the opera buffa at the Lyceum, where he produced an operetta of his own. composed in Naples, Lin Anno ed na Giorno. Turning his attention afterwards to English opera, he com posed The Gipsy's Warning (1838). The Brides of Venice 08441, and T-le Crtmtders (1846), three works which. translated into German, have been well received in the composer's native country. Ile conducted the opera in Covent Garden theater in 1843 and 1844.

and the Norwich musical festival in 1845, and has since conducted much at concerts and great musical gatherings in London and in the provinces, besides being a successful pianoforte teacher. In 1830, he conducted at mademoiselle Jenny Lind's concerts iu America. In 1860, he produced a cantata, Udine, at the Norwich musical festival, which was very well received. His Lily of Killarney, first given in 1862, at Covent Garden. was his greatest r peratic success. Be has since produced a cantata. Richard (hear de Lion; an opera di camera, The Bride of Song; a romantic opera. I:mei-tail's; and a cantata, S', Cr ilia. Ilia operas have much dramatic and melodic beauty, and in style and feeling are singularly English, to be the composition of a foreigner. His oratorio, St. Peter. written for the Birmingham musical festival. 1870. met with extnior dinary success. Ills first symphony was received with great favor in 1873. In 1878, he was for the 12th time conductor of the Norwich festival. Knighthood was conferred on B. in 1871, and he holds many foreign orders.
