Brawlpoor

principal, indigo and junction

BRAWLPOOR', the capital of the protected state of the saine name in India, is situ ated on a tributary of the Gliara, which. formed by the junction of the Suticj and the fleas, falls into the Chenab about 50 ni. further down, in hit. 29' 24' it., and long. 71° 47' east. It has a circuit of 4 in.—part, however, of the inclosed space Leing occupied by groves of trees; and its population is estimated at 20,000. B. has manufacturths of scarfs and turbans, chintzes, and other cottons, and the immediate neighborhood is remarkably fertile in grain. sugar, indigo, tobacco, and butter, with an abundance of mangoes, oranges, apples, and other fruits, in perfection. For external commerce, too, 13. is favorably placed, standing at the junction of three routes respectively from the e., s.c., and s.; while, towards the it., the Hindu merchants, who are very enterprisiug, have dealings with Bokhara, and even with Astrukhan.-2. The state of 13. lies in hit. 27° 41' to 30' 25'; and long. 30' to 73° 58' east. The area is about 15,000 sq.m.—the popu lation being approxunately esthnated at 472,800 in 1871, or rather more than 31 inhabi tants to a square mile. The country is remarkable level: only about one sixth is capa

ble of cultivation. The fertile portion, skirting the Gliara and the Indus, has a purely alluvial soil; but the remainder, though presenting many traces of former cultivation and population, is now, from want of water, an irreclaimable desert either of hard dry clay-, or of loose shifting sands. Besides beasts of chat, such as tigers, boars, ete„ 13. abounds in domestic animals, such as camels, kine, buffaloes, goats, and broad-tailed sheep. In few parts of the world are provisions finer or cheaper. The principal exports are cotton, sugar, indigo, hides, drugs, dye-stuffs, wool. ghee or butter, and provisions in general. The principal imports are the wares of Britain and India. In 1806, the state, at the request of the leading men, was taken under British management till the young nabob should be of age. The great majority of the inhabitants are 31ohanat inedans.
