histoire, revolution and college

MICITELET, JULES, a brilliant French historian, b. at Paris, Aug. 21, 1798. He studied milli great success under Viriemain and Leclerc, and at the age of 23 became a professor in the college Rollin, where he taught history, philosophy, and the classics. In 1826 he pubrished Les Tableaux Synchronigaes de l'liktoire Moderne, and was named master of conferences (Maitre des Conferences) at the ecole normale. After the revolu tion of 1830 he was chosen bead of the historic section, intrusted with the care of the archives of the kingdom, assistant to Guizot at the Sorbonne, and tutor to the princess Clementine, daughter of the French king, and published several valuable hooks, such a.s .Precis deC Histoire Moderne (1833, of which there have been more than 20 editions); Precis 'Ilistoire de France jusgu'ci la Revolution Francaise (the 7th edition of which appeared 1842) Memoires de Luther (1835); Origines du Droll Frawais cherchies dans les Sot boles et .hormules du Droit Universel (1837). In 1838 he succeeded Daunau in the college de France, and comte Reinhard in the professorship of moral philosophy. He now plunged into controversy with all the vivacity and impetuosity of his nature. The

Jesuits were the grand objects of his dislike; and eloquence, sarcasm, senthnent, and history were all brought to bear upon them with brilliant effect. Three books were the fruits of his polemic: Des Jesuits, in conjunction with Edgar Quinet (1843); Du Pretre, de la Femme, et de kt Famille, (1844); Du Peuple (1846). In lt347 appeared the first volume of his Histoire de la Rivolution; and it was finished in 1853, in 6 vols. When the affair of 1848 broke out, acting more wisely than most of his learned confreres. he declined to take a-n active part in political struggles, and quietly pursued his literary avocations. He, however, lost his situation in the archives office after the coup d'etat, by- rZfusing to take the oath of allegiance to Louis Napoleon. Other works of his were L' Oiseau (1856); L' Insecte (1857); L' Amour (1858); and La Femme (1859); La Her (1861); La Sorciere (1862); La 13thle de r Ilumanite (1864); and Nos Fils (1869), a plea for compulsory educa tion. His masterpiece is his Histoire de 1/1.ance, continued in Histoire de /a Revolution Frangaise, and Histoire du XIX," Siecle. Miehelet died in 1874.
