LEO JUDIE, one of the Swiss Reformers, and the early friend of Zuingli, was born at Germar in Alsace, in 1482. His father's name was John Jud ; but whether this arose from his family being of Jewish descent, Leo himself tells us he was unable to say. The name, however, exposed him to re proach, and perhaps for this reason we find him sometimes designating himself Leo Keller ; in Ziirich he was known as Meister Low, and this name his descendants adbpted. He was educated for the medical profession ; but through the influence of Zuingli he forsook this for the clerical, and in 1522 became minister of St. Peter's Church at Ziirich. Here he laboured till his death, and had an important share in the reformatory movements of the time and the doctrinal controversies which divided the Reformers. He died t9th June 1542. At the time of his death he was engaged on a translation of the Bible into I,atin, which he left unfinished : it was completed by Bibliander, who translated what was left of the O. T. ; Pet. Choli,
who translated the Apociyphal books ; and Rud. Gualter, who translated the N. T. on the basis of the version of Erasmus. The work was revised by Pellican, and appeared in 1543. This translation is marked by adherence to the meaning rather than the words of the original; it is consequently somewhat paraphrastic ; but it is fair and true, and thc Latinity is good. It has been often re printed. Leo translated also into German Eras mus' Paraphrases of the N. T. ; Augustine's tract De Spiritu et Litera, and edited several of the works of Zuingli.
