SEMECARPUS, a genus of plants of the S.E. of Asia, of the sub-order Anacardiem of the order Anacardiacem. The genus Sememrpus comprises moderate-sized or large trees, and many furnish wood and other useful products. S. aeuminata, iVall., middle-sized tree in the foresta of the Ratnapura, Galle, and Ambagamowa dis tricts of Ceylon at no great elevation, and it grows also in Chittagong. S. cassuvium, Roxb., the Cassuvium sylvestre of Rumphius, is a tree of the Moluccas, where its tender leaves are eaten, and the acrid juice of its stem is employed to varnish shields, canes, etc. S. coriacea, Thw., is a moderate-sized tree of the Central Province of Ceylon, at an elevation of 5000 to 7000 feet. S. Gardneri, Thw. (Badulla - gass, Sison.), is a moderate-sized tree, very common in the Central Province of Ceylon up to an elevation of 3000 feet. S. humilis, IVall., occurs at Prome. S. Moonii. This., is a moderate-sized tree of Ceylon, in the south of the island, at no great elevation. S. nigro-viridis, Thw., is a moderate-sized tree in

the Central Province of Ceylon, at an elevation of 2000 to 4000 feet. S. odoratus, Wall., in the Royal Garden, Ceylon. The S. oblongifolia, Tim, called Badulla-gass, Smolt., is a moderate sized tree, common in the hot, drier parts of the island of Ceylon up to an elevation of 3000 feet. S. obovata, Moon, is a moderate-sized tree of Ceylon, growing at Caltura, and near Ratnapum. S. obscura, Thw., a moderate-sized tree, growing at Deltotte, in the Central Province of Ceylon, at an elevation of 3000 feet. S. parvifolia, Thw. (Ilin-badulla-gass, Swan.), is a small-sized tree of Ceylon, in the Ilinidun Corle, in the Gallo dis trict. S. pubescens, ia a small-sized tree of the liatnapura district in Ceylon, at no great elevation. S. subpeltata, 7'hw. (Malia-badulla gass, SINGH.), is a large tree of Ceylon, 30 to 40 feet high, in the Singlie-raja and other forests between Ratnapura and Galle.—Rosb. ; Thw. ; Voigt.
