Zeus Auratus

found, supposed and stratum

ZEUS AURATUS. It is concluded, after much discussion, that this may also equally be a Pleuronectes or a Tetra. don. Another equally imperfect subject is supposed to to be the Pleuronectes maximus, or turbot. This one is accompanied by sea shells.

SquALus ? So conjectured from a series of thirty-eight vertebral joints, extending five feet, and scarcely diminish ing in breadth throughout this course.

At Maestriclit and Perigueux, fragments of fishes have also been found, in the same stratum, as is supposed ; but no species have been ascertained.

In the " Calcaire grossier" of the Paris basin, some re mains of fishes have also been discovered. Beneath the gypsum, or in the lower marine stratum, is found an im pression which is referred, doubtingly, to the LABRUS Jul.'s. This occurs at Nanterre. La Cepede and Faujas de St. Fond are, however, of opinion, that it is a Cory phena, and that it approaches in character to the Cory phena chrysurus ; while Mr. Barry thinks that it is a

Sparus, and that it resembles the Sparus auratus. Others have been found in the quarries of St. Denis, but have not been described.

In the marine limestone above the gypsum, various fragments, such as teeth, vertebra, &c. have been observ ed ; and Faujas mentions some impressions of small fishes, supposed to belong to Cyprinus minutus.

These are generally impressions of the skeleton, sometimes with parts of the skin adhering. The rock is a yellowish fossil limestone. Geologists do not seem to be quite agreed respecting the true place of this stratum in the series. The species de scribed as found in it are the following :
