KAZAN, or CASAN, is a city of Russia, and capital of a government of the same name, situated on the high bank of the rivulet Kazanka, above five versts to the left of the Volga. It consists of a strong fort, built with stone—of a town, built of wood—and of several suburbs, one of which is inhabited by the Tartars. There are here several churches built of stone, and eleven convents. At one end of the town is a cloth manufactory, the produce of which is bought by government at a fixed price, for the purpose of clothing the soldiers. It has also been long celebrated for its manufacture of Russian leather. In the convent of Sclandowa, which is situated about two versts from the town, on the river Kazanka, is a school for the education of the Tartars, who are instructed in the Russian and Lath languages, in the elements of philosophy, and in the princi• pies of the Christian religion, in qrder to qualify them at preachers. Kazan is also the see of an archbishop. The garrison of the city consists of three regiments, for the us( of whom there is a good hospital. The surrounding coup

try is fertile in wheat, barley, oats, Ice. ; and to the nortl and cast are extensive woods of fine oaks, which arc con veyed to St. Petersburgh for ship-building. The city tea: consumed by fire in 1749 and 1752. Its distance from Mos. cow is 400 miles east, and from St. Petersburgh 66( south-east. It is situated in East Long. 49° 3', and if North Lat. 55° 451.

KEFT, or Cor•os, is a town of Egypt, situated on a canal made from the right bank of the Nile. At a vil lage to the north of the town are the ruins of a small tem ple. There is a lake about 300 pacts long and 200 brbad, to the east of the high ground of the old city, which seems to have been a reservoir for the supply of the town.. Over the canal which rises to the south of this are the remains of two bridges, one of which has five piers, but no arches, large stones being laid from one pier to another. r Distance front Cairo 250 miles south, East Long. 32° 0', and North Lat. 25° 50'.
