GEIJERSTAM, Gustaf af, Swedish novel ist and dramatist: b. Province of Vestmanland, 5 Jan. 1858; d. Stockholm, 6 March 1909. He pursued studies in the Faculty of Philosophy at Upsala 1877-79; entered the career of a writer 1882, and served as literary manager for the Gernandt Publishing House in Stockholm from 1897 to 1902. Geijerstam's earliest work is in the field of the realistic novel. (Gralcallt' 1882) ; Folk' ((Poor Peo ple) 1884; Pt. 2, 1889) and Berattelser' Crown-Sheriff's Tales' 1890) deal with the life of the lower classes. The novels Grane> (1885) and (Pastor Hallin> (1887) represent youthful characters, under the influence of materialistic modes of thought. Geijerstam's work as a dramatist be gins with the comedy (Svarfar) in 1888. He is particularly popular, as a dramatist, in plays dealing with peasant life in Sweden, such as (Per Olsson och bans karing,"Lars Anders och Jan Anders och deras barn' ((Per Olsson and his Old Woman,) 'Lars Anders and Jan Anders and their children,) 1894), and as the author of the comedy (Stiliga Augusta' and the f airy play Klas och Litt Klas.' He returned to
the novel in producing a number of less realistic works, including hufvud) (1895); (Kampen om Karlek) (1896) ; (Vilse i lifvet' (1897) ; yttersta skaret) (1898) ; (1898); manniskor) (1899) ; 'Kvinnomakt' (1901) ; Tuvesson och hans moder' (1902) ; (Sko gen och sjon' (1903) • (Sjalarnas kamp' (1904) ; (Karin Brandts Drom) (1905) ; Mork) (1906) ; 'Den eviga Gatan> (1907). Two works are autobiographical in character: (Boken om Lille-Btor) (1900), and 'Mina (1907). None of Geijerstam's works has been printed in English translation, but there is a collected edition in German.
