HEWETT, hVt, Waterman Thomas, American Germanic scholar: b. Miami, Mo., 10 Jan. 1846. He was graduated from Amherst College in 1869, studied in Europe and was professor of German language and literature at Cornell University from 1870 to 1910, when he became professor emeritus. He has resided in Europe since 1913, in Oxford since 1914.
