4. When the digraph ea is sounded as in head or as in heart, use the letter that is sounded and omit the other, as helth, bevy, insted, tred, wakes, picsant, hart, har'. etc.
5. Substitute e for the digraphs and ligatures at, a, oe, re, when not final, as medieval, fenix, cyclopedia. etc.
6. When ch is pronounced c, drop h, except before e, 1, and y, as caracter, epoc, arcangd, mecanic, monarc, scoter, nod, sWmar, lecnirai, etc.; but chemist, architect, monarchy, etc.
7. Drop silent h from initial rh, as rapsody, reumatisns, rsibarb. etc.
8. Reduce l' final, after a short strest vowel, to I, as bd, dal, dril, duel, fit, jut, fulfil, shot, tel. mil, wilful, etc.
9. Reduce the double final consonants bb, dd, ff, a. nu, rr, tt, as, to a single consonant, as eb, ad, od, suf, eg, bun, bur, whir, net, bus. etc.
10. Drop -me from mine final, as gram, program.
11. Drop -le from ette final, as cigaret, coquet. &qua. omelet, quartet, etc.
12. Drop silent zee final after g, as catalog. colkag, dialog, pedagog, synagog, etc.; except when g is preceded by a single long vowel, as in rogue, vague. rogue. etc. Tongue spell king. Milton's way.
13. For -ough substitute o, u, of uf, ode. out, or up, accord ing to the sound. as tho, Ant. cof, nod, hock. drout, hiccup. etc. Plough spell plow.
14. Drop silent b final, as num, lam, him, num, thaws, etc.; except where its omission would suggest an incorrect pronunciation. as tomb, comb, etc.
15. Drop e from ey final unstresst, pronounced like short y final, as abby. Early, chimny, donky, gaily, many. trolly. vally, whisky, etc.
16. Substitute z for s in the verb-suffix -ise, as advertise, civilize. criticize. pauperize, etc.
17. Change re final to -er, as renter, fiber. meter, theater, etc.
18. Drop u from our final in words of two or more syllables, as ardor, color, favor, honor, labor, etc.
