MHOS, one of the larger Cycled's., is situated west of Naxos, from which It is separated by a channel six miles wide. Pares is estimated to be about one-half the duo of Naxos it is about 36 miles in circum femme. The surface is billy ; it prodeces corn, abundance of fruit, and bee flocks of .beep and herd. of swill., and plenty of partridges and other game. The population, according to Thiersch (' ettat de la Grebe'), is about 4000. The head town of Paros, called Pariehia, is oe the site of the ancient town, in the Inner recess of a bay on the north-west coast of the island. The principal harbour is on the north-met coast, and is the finest in the archipelago. The mountain Marpesus, now called Capresso, near the centre of the island, abounds with white marble, which was often used by the ancient sculptors. There ars four or five villages on the island, besides the capital, end several Greek monasteries scattered about.
Parer is said to have been colonised by the Cretans. It attained a great degree of prosperity by its maritime trade, and the chief town was wealthy and well fortified. When Darius invaded Greece, the
