CAMUCCISI, VICENZO, one of the most distinguished modern Roman painters, was bons at Rome about 1775. Left Ile orphan at an early age, be was instructed in design under the care of a brother, Pietro, who followed the calling of a restorer of old picture+. For many years Viceneo earned his living by copyidg the works of the gnat masters. The first original works by which he attracted notice were subj.-de from early Roman history. His 'Infancy of Romulus and Remus 'Harju. Codes,' and others, gained him great applause; and his • Death of Cedar' and ' Death of Virginia' were purchased for the prirate collection of the King of Naples. He always voluted In that 'classic' style which the modern Italians have so long looked upon as the highest excellence. Even in his religioos piers. which are very numerous, the academic model is never loot sight of To an eye accustomed to the licence of English painters, Quouccini appears intolerably constrained and formal ; but in Rome be Is perhaps still regarded as one of the greatest of modern painters. In Ida lifetime he received an ample share of wealth and b000nrs. The pope appointed him inspector-general of the papal museums and of the mosaic works, and keeper of the collections of the Vatican. For many years he was director of the Academy of

St. Luke, and director of the Neapolitan Academy at Rome. Pius VII. crated him a baton : the emperor Francis L of Austria conferred on bins the Order of the Iron Crown; and he was elected a member of the Inetitute of Franc..
