HONCYRIUS. The name of four popes and one ant ipope.-110NOR11•8 I., Pope 625-38. Ile was horn of a consular faiMly in Campania. Of his early history little is known. except that lie took an active part in bringing to a close the dis putes which arose in Northern Italy about the controversy of the three chapters. (See VIGIL II•S.) As Pope his name is connected with the history of the paschal controversy in !rebind. and with that of the early Anglo-Saxon Church. and his pontificate is particularly memorable on acconnt of the .11onothelite heresy. (See llonorins, misled, it is al le,red, by a statement of Sergius, Patriarch of Constantinople, expressed himself in which would appear to condemn the doetrine of two wills of Christ. In a decree of the sixth general council (Constantinople. 680-81) Ibmo ritis is anathematized in company with many others, of whose heterodoxy there can be no dotiht. Catholic theologians. however. his orthodoxy, or at least point out that his ease is not one of those in which infallibility is claimed by the Vatican decree. It. was because Drdlinger (q.v.) believed that the heresy of llonorins was irrefutably established that lie could not conscientiously accept the dogma of Papal infallibility. because it was retroactive and implied that there never had lwen a pope who was heretical. This assertion in regard to Boma-ins was an important factor in the Old Catholic InoVelnont. Ile died in 638. Consult : MIlinger.
