HOYT, Crimurs HALE (1460-19001. An American dramatist. born in Concord, N. IL He studied law, was connected for a time with the Saint Albans 1Vt.1 rtiser, became musical and dramatic critic of the Boston Post, turned playwright, and wrote a -cries of farcical come dies. which netted the author n fortune, and contain sonic char:toter-studies of more or less cleverness. The greatest success of these was called t Trip to Chinatown (IC90). .1 Midnight Bell (18S7) was his one serious attempt. He was twice a member of the New Hampshire Legislature.

HOYT, ,loin WESLEY (1831—). An Ameri can educator and administrator. horn near Worth ington, Ohio. Ile graduated at Ohio Wesleyan University (1849), and studied law and medicine. In It-;57 he removed to Madison, Wis., and there edited and published (lie Wisconsin Farmer. in 1SQ. llo•t was appointed State Commissioner to the London Exposition. and lie was I ailed States Commissioner at the Paris Exposition of IS67. To the Vienna Exposition of 1873 he was sent as executive commissioner, and was president of the international jury for education and science. In

Hoyt reorg•inized the University of isconsin; suggested and framed a bill for the establishment (I a national univer sity. and was appointed chairman of a committee of four hundred thereon. and from Is78 to 1'183 was Governor of the Territory of Wyoming. He was president of Wyoming University from (SST to 1591. In 1897, ailing as a vonunissioner of the king of Korea. he procured the admission of that country to the Universal Postal Union.
