HUNT, WILIJANI Altauti.s (1821-79). An Anieriean landscape, figure, and portrait painter. lie was born at Brattleboro, \I., Aland] 31, 1824. lie entered llarvard College in 1840, hut, com pelled to have on account of his health, he traveled in Europe. Ile at first studied sculp ture at the .keadenly of Diisseldorf in 1816. and afterwards took up painting with Couture in Paris. Attraeted to Ilarbizon, be lierame friend and follower Alillet, who exercised the strongest influence on his art. In 1855 blunt returned to the United States, and soon after wards established himself in Boston. There he became a very successful teacher of painting, and exercised a marked influence upon American art. lie taught pupils the new art methods of Paris, and influenced large not only by the superiority of his aims, but by his own work. Ills criticisms and sayings in his studio were compiled and edited ly his pupil, Helen Al. Knowlton. and published under the title Tnll..R on .1 rt 13 vols.. Boston. 1875.8•). Under sudden derangement he committed suicide on the Isle of Shoals. September S. 1879. His work is line in color. and masterly in execu tion. At first he showed a preference for figure subjects—peasant s, ehildren. tlower-girls. and Parisian types. In portrait painting his aim was to represent the eharaeter of the person, even at the expense of finish in the aecessories. Ibis later subjects were principally lamlseapes, in \Odell he showed largeness of style and vigor of execution.

Among his most important fig-ure subjects are "Head of a Shearing at Ilar• bizon;" "The Farmers' lleturn;" Fortune teller:" "The Prodigal Son." 'flue Moston :Mu seum contains a number of his svith the Kitten," "Girl Beading," "Peasant Girl at Barbizon," "Ala rglwrit e," "1 I urdy-Citrtly Boy." and a portrait of the artist. Ills traits those of Chief Justice Cray, AIrs.

G. W. Long. \Villiani II. Gardiner, and William AI. .1itiong his landscapes are: "Glouces ter Ila•bor." "Newton Lower Falls," "Coast Scene at Alagnolia. Mass.." and "Dead in the Snow." Ili, most ambitious works, the "Flight of Night," and other decorations in the Capitol at Albany, were executed in 1878, not long before his death.

EMiL (1827-1902 ) . A German battle painter, horn in Paris. He was a pupil of Flandrin and Vernet ; later studied in Antwerp under \Yappers and Dyekmans, and after settling at Ditsseldorf received further in struetion from Camphausen. liis first pieture of importance was the "Charge of Cuirassiers of the Time of Frederick II." Ile teas with the army in Schleswig (Isiit t. accompanied the Army of the Alain in I866, and provided illustrations for a 'history of that campaign. Alany of his other works illustrate episodes of the Franco-Prussian and the Seven Years' wars.
