JONES, ALFRED GILPIN A Cana dian statesman, horn in Nova Scotia, and edu cated at the Yarmouth Academy. Ilk active in terest in polities did not begin until 1805, when the movement for Canadian confederation brought him out as one of its opponents, and, after the death of the Hon. Joseph Howe, he became the leader of the Nova Scotia opposition to that plan. In 1807 he was elected a member of the Dominion Parliament for Halifax, and, joining the Liberal Party in federal politics, was made Minister of Militia in the Cabinet of Alexander _Mackenzie, an office which he held in 1874-78. He served an additional term as member of the Dominion Par liament during 1887-91. Jones. though a United Empire Loyalist by descent. and during his ear lier career a Conservative. later became a warm supporter of commercial union with the 'United States, and in general was opposed to schemes of Imperial consolidation, whether in trade or politics.

Mass. He studied medicine, and after living for short periods in Philadelphia, New Orleans, and South America, finally, in 1533, settled in Bra zoria County, Tex. He was a surgeon in the Texan Army during the war between that coun try and Mexico, and after the cessation of active hostilities was elected a member of the Second Texan Congress (18:34). The next piar he was appointed Minister to the United States. After his return front ‘Vashington he was elected from Brazoria County to the Texan Senate, and in 1541 President Houston appointed him Secretary of State. In 1S44 he was elected President of Texas, an office which he held until February 10, I546, when he turned over the Government to .T. Pinckney Henderson. the first Governor under the Constitntion of the United States. His journal and autobiography were published in 1S5S. Jones County, and its county-seat, Anson. in Texas, were named in his honor.
