JENKIN, CHARLES FLEEM INC (1833 85). An English engineer and ele•trieian. He was horn at Stowting Court, Emit, England, and. after instrueted at a number of educational institutions. graduated from the University of Genoa as Master of in 1850. While engaged in electrical engineering connected with cable test ing and laying, lie became acquainted with Sir William Thomson. afterwards Lord Kelvin, and later a partnership was established, and many important cubit's were laid under their direc tion. In addition to his work in telegraph and cable enoineering. .Ienkin was also associated with Sir William Thomson and C. F. Varlet' in the invention and construction of electrical in struments. At Sir William's suggestion he was made a member of the committee appointed by the British Association to consider and deter mine practical electrical units, and prepared a number of important reports on this subject.

Ile also devised the system of telpherage for the transportation of g(11)(1.: from place to place, and was interested in questions of mechanical and civil engineering. as well as electrical matters. In

Is65 he became professor of engineering in Uni versity College, London, and in 1S63 he accepted a call to it similar chair in the University ot Ldinburgh, which' lie held until his death. In 1865 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London, nail in 1879 was elected vice-president of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. the larger part of his many scientific appearing in the Transactions and Proceedings of these two societies. Ile was an LL.D. of Glasgow Uni versity. and Wft, a man of letters and broad in formation. as well as a successful scientist. lie was particularly interested in sanitary reform, and organized societies for this purpose in Edin burgh and elsewhere. lie WIN the author of a successful work on Electririty and Magnetism (18 3).
