KOBELL, FRANZ vox (1803-82). A German mineralogist and poet, born in Munich and edu cated at Landshut. Ile became professor of mineralogy in Alunich in 1826, and in ISM was appointed first curator of the State collection of minerals. To mineralogy his greatest contribu tions were new methods in crystallography and the valuable invention of the stauroscope. His scientific publications include: Cherakteristik der Mincralica (1830-31); Skizzen ens dem, Atiteinreich (1850); Mineralogie: Poputere Fortidyr ( Be) ; and, above all the Taleln :lir Be stimmung der ilinerelien (1833; 13th ed. 1893) ; Galranographie (1842; 2d ed. 1840, describing a method of his own invention: and Gesehichte der Mineralogic (1%0. Kobell's popular po etry, in the dialects of Upper Bavaria and of the Palatinate, shows the true ris cornice, and the possession' of rich fancy without the lack of verisimilitude. Des Kiinstlers Weihr, Z•iNchcts Himmel nod Erdc, .1/a.r Emenuels Brentrehrt, George Washington, and Dirblin i•on Yorktown. which were pub lished mostly between 1849 and 1853. Ile lived at Heidelberg (1853-50 as tlieatrieal manager. On the publication of his Theaterk•isis min ?warn elcutselwn Reich (1872). lie was appointed man ager of the royal theatre at Karlsruhe.
