JUNOT. ANDOCIIE, Duke of Ahrantes (1771-1813). A marshal of France. Ile was born October 23. 1771. at Bussy-le-frand. in the Department of Ctite-d'Or. entered the army as a volunteer durirg the early days of the Revolu tion. and distinguished himself in the first wars of the Republic. Napoleon's attention was first drawn to hint (luring the siege of Toulon. Junot accompanied his patron to Italy as aide-de-camp, and at, the battle of Alillesimo (.\pril 13.14, 1796) he distinguished himself Sit greatly that he Was chosen to Carry the colors back to Paris. Ile was later wounded in the head at Lomato, an injury from the effects of which he never completely reeovcred. In 1798 he fol lowed Napoleon to Egypt, was there created a hrigadier-goteral, and particularly distinguished himself at Nazareth, where, at the head of three hundred cavalry, he put to flight in army of several thousand Turl:s. Having been wounded in a duel, Junot was left in Egypt, and OD the journey hack to France was captured by the English. lie ieturned to Paris. however, in 1800, and was made a general of division and com mand:tut of Paris. The latter post was not tilled by in a satisfactory manner. After he had served at .\era for a short time he was sent. in 180-1, :Is French Ambassador to Portugal. lie left. Lisbon without permission. in 1805. and

joined Napoleon in tIermany. distinguishing him self at the battle of .1usterlitz. For a short time in 18o6 Junot was again commandant of Paris. but again showed himself prodigal and extrava gant, and finally, in 1807, he was appointed to the command of the army destined for the in vasion of Portugal. Ills army, after undergoing dreadful privations, reached Lisbon 1/ecentlier 1st, and Junot made himself master of all the strong places in the Kingdom. For his brilliant con• duet at this time he was created Duke of .1brautes and appointed Governor of Portugal; but being defeated by \Vellington at Vimeiro (August 21. 18o8), he concluded it convention at ('intro for the evacuation of Portugal by the French. returned to France. and subsequently fought in the Peninsula and in Russia. In 1812 he was stigmatized by Napoleon as deficient in energy, and sent to govern Illyria. .1t this time, however. it bevante clear that his mind was deranged. and he was brought haek to Franee and was taken to his father's house at :\lontbard, near Dijon, but two hours after his arrival he precipitated himself front a window and frac tured his thigh-bone. Amputation was per formed, but Junot frantieally tore off the band ages, and died a week later. July 29, 1813.
