wordsworth and philosophy

KNIGHT, WifrimAxt Axons (1836-1. A British writer. He was horn at Modrington, Scot land, and was educated at the University of Edin burgh. Tn 1876 he became professor of moral philosophy in the University of Saint Andrews; and at various times he has been examiner to the University of London, to the Victoria Uni ‘ersity, and to the British Civil Service Com mission, and to the University of New Zealand. In the field of philosophy his publications include his collection of 1'iil/0500/ra/ Classics for Eng lish Readers (15 vols., 1880•90), for which he wrote: Hume (1881)); Essays in Philosophy, Old and New (1890) ; The Philosophy of the health ful (2 vols., 1891-93) ; The Christian Ethic (189-1); and Aspects of Theism (189-1). Ile is probably best known, however, tor his works on Wordsworth. Besides his edition of Words worth's Works and Life ( 1881-89), and The Transactions of the Wordsworth Society ( 1880 81;), mention should be made of his Sr-led/ions from Wordsworth (1889) ; Wordsworthiana 118801; Through the Wordsworth Country (1892) ; Wordsworth's Prose (1893) ; The Eng lish Lake District, as Interpreted in the Poems of Wordsworth ( 1S7S-91 ) : and The Works of William Wordsworth and Dorothy Words worth (12 vols., 1896-97). Finally (189S). as a

further monument of his admiration for Words worth, he presented to the trustees of Dove Cot tage. Grasmere, the poet's former home, all the editions of Wordsworth's poems which he pos sessed, as well as many relies, including maim scripts of the poet. Among his most recent works are: Dore Cottage from 1800 to MOO (1900); Lord lionboddo and Some of llis Contem poraries ( 1900) ; Inter Amieos (1901); and Pro ('atria et Regina (19011.
