KOFU, ko'M The chief town of the Prov ince of Kai. Yamanashi ken. Japan, about SO miles southwest of Tokio (Map: Japan. E 61. It stinds in a mountainous region. and is one of the most progressive towns in Japan. It has many fine buildings in European style. Its chief industry is silk-weaving. The thin sarsenet-like fabric called kai-ki and used for linings is its most celebrated product. KoGEL, Rrnol.• ( 1829.961. _1 German theologian and distinguished preacher, born at Birnbaum. in the Province of Posen. He studied theology and philolfwv at the universities of Halle and Berlin. After teaching and preaching for a number of years, lie was appointed preacher at. the Cathedral of Berlin in 1863, and the fol lowing year was made counselor of the Con sistory of Brandenburg and counselor to the Minister for Public Worship. In 1880 he ad
vanced to the rank of Royal Chaplain-in-chief, and in 1884 he became a member of the State Council; but between 1891 and 1894 ill health compelled him to relinquish all his posts. By dint of his great influence with the Emperor Wil liam, he deteated Falk's Church policy, and thus gave the spiritual development of Prussia a con servative direction. He also became known as one of the most eloquent preachers of Germany.
