LAVISSE, ERNEST ( S42— ). A French historian, horn at Nouvion•cu-Thh•radie, Aisne. lie was educated at a classical school in Paris. and at the Superior Normal School. and received a fellowship in history in 181;5. Ile taught for ten years in the lyceums at Nancy, Versailles. and at the College of Henry IV.; was then appointed master of conferences at the Superior Normal School, and in ISSS became professor of modern history in the Faculty of Let ters at Paris. in IS92 he was elected to the French Academy, lie is distinguished alike for the clearness and carefulness of his elementary works, and for the authoritative character of his researches. Ilk lectures, the most at the University of Paris, and his extensive eontribu lions to historical literature, have won for him a high place among French histii•ians. In both lie has striven to bring, about a better feeling be tween France and Germany, and his personal popularity has been evidenced by election as president of the Association of French Students.
