MAHO'NY, FRANCIS SYLVESTER (1804-66), best known by his pseudonym of FATHER Paoti.r. An Irish poet and humorist. He was born in Cork. His father wished him to prepare for the bar, hut lie chose the Church, and, after studying in Paris and at Rome, was admitted to the Order of Jesuits. lie was appointed prefect of studies and afterwards master of rhetoric in the Jesnit Col lege at Clongoweswood, Ireland; but, becoming involved in a misadventure, was obliged to resign his position, and, returning to Italy, was ex cluded from the Jesuit Society. He then en tered the priesthood, but clerical life was not congenial, and he devoted himself to literature and journalism. He began in 1834 to contribute to Fraser's Magazine a series of papers which were afterwards collected and published in book form as The Reliques of Father Front. They comprised sketches in prose and verse ("The Bells of Shaudon" being the hest known), parodies, playful translations into Creek, Latin. and

Ile contributed to Bentley's Miscellany, and furnished an inaugu ral ode to the first number of the Cornhi// Nap Ile was the first 'Roman correspoddent of the Daily News, and was Paris corre spondent of the London Globe for several years after 135S. The last two years of his life were passed in a monastery. The Reliques of Father Front was included in Bohn's Illustrated Library in 1860. Another Tolima., Final Meliques, was edited by Douglas Jerrold and published in 18711. The Works of Father Front, edited by Charles Kent, were published in 1831. Facts and Figures from Italy (1847) was made from his Roman letters to the London Daily Yen's.
