MAURICE, ( JOIIN ) FREDERIC DENISON ( 1805-72 ) . An English author and divine, born at Normanston.the son of a Unitarian clergyman. Ile studied at Cambridge and became in literary work in London. Influenced by Coleridge and others, he decided to become a clergyman in the Established Church. Ile went to Oxford and took his M.A. degree, and was ordained in 1531. Ili; first position was the curacy of Bubbenhall. in 18311 lie became chaplain of Grey's Hospital, London: in 1540 professor of history and English literature at King's College, and in 15411 of divinity in this sehool, losing these last positions in 1853 because of his supposedly radical religious views. Ile was chaplain of Lincoln's Inn. 1846-00; incumbent of Saint Peter's. Vere Street. London, 1800-09; profes sor of moral philosophy at Cambridge from 1860 until his death, which oecurred in London, April 1. 1872. At the time of his death there was proba lily 110 clergyman in England more deeply revered and loved by the people, and within the Chureb he had beeome the head of the 'Broad Churelt l'arty.' and had a large follow

ing among the younger men. He founded the \Vorkimg College in London in 18,54 and its principal. Ile wrote one novel, 1:114111,.
