MARTHA'S VINEYARD. .\n island off the southern coast of :Massachusetts, of which :state it forms, with one or two minor islets, the county of Dukes (Map: 'Massachusetts, F 51. Tt is 20 miles long and 10 miles in greatest width, and is separated from the mainland by Vineyard 4 to ti miles wide. The island is rather level. and to a large extent covered with low for ests presenting a remarkable variety of flora. The southern eoast has shallow and sand bars, while on the north side the coast consists of bluffs about 30 feet high. and to the west termi nates in the bold headland Gay Head. 200 feet and surmounted by a lighthouse. The island is a much fre(1110111141 resort. and is noted for its annual camp meetings. The principal town and the county scat is Edgartowm. The population in 1P90 was 43119. and in 1900 151;1. The island was discovered and named by Bartholomew Gosnold in 11;02. Ind in n habitants were all converted to Christianity. and were loyal to the whites during Philip's War. the Ilevolution the island was plundered by the British.
Josh .11;mAN (1853-95). A Cuban patriot, born in Havana. As a youth he worked in the quarries. but he was afterwards able to go to Spain, where lie studied law. The independency of Cuba had been his dream for many years, and he was twice imprisoned for his radical views nn the subject. lie was professor of literature and philosophy in the University of Guatemala for a time, and represented the Argen tine Re(mblie, Uruguay, and Paraguay as consul in New York City. There be published La Patria, a journal devoted to Cuban interests. His writ ings include a translation of llelen Jack son's Ramona (1555). At the end of the year 1594. Marti, with some friends from the United States. armed and manned three vessels and sailed for Cuba, but they were captured at Fer nandina, Fla. On another expedition in 1595, he succeeded ill landing at Cabonico, and marched inland with Gomez. Marti himself had in tended to return abroad, but the army was at tacked by the ,Spaniang at Dos Rios, and he was shot.
