MILLAIS, Sir .Tcix EVERETT !1(i). An English genre. landscape, and portrait painter. He was born at Southampton, dune 8, 1829, and was brought up in the isle of Jersey. In 1837 he received his tirst instruction in art from Bessel, a at Southampton. In and 1839 he studied at the School of Henry Sass in Bloomsbury, and the following at the Royal Academy. in whirl he carried every prize. receiving a gold medal in 1817. In he became assoeiated with William Dolman Dante Gabriel Rossetti. and others in the formation of the Pre Ilaphaelite Brotherhood (q.v.). His work traeted the attention of Ruskin. for whom he made some architectural (lesions, and whose por trait he painted. In 1855 he married divorced wife. De was made associate member of the Royal Academy in and member in Front ISGO to 1570 he was employed as ilhistrator, and among other hooks poems and novels. lie re ceived a medal of honor at the Paris Exposition in 1S7S and was In honorary member of several academies. Aside from his landscapes and portraits, his subject. include Scriptural, historical,and ary scenes front every day life, and a few national in such as "The ( Is551, painted in honor of the London firemen.

From IS17 to 18.53 his work is strongly influenced by Pre-Raphaelite theories and aroused much criticism.
