MIL'LET, FitAxcis DAVIS ( 1846— ). An Ameriean genre painter, wa] correspondent, and author, lie was born at Mattapoisett, Mass., November 3, 1846. He was educated at Ilarva•d College and took part in the Civil Wa• as a drummer and assistant surgeon. Ile was a pupil at the Royal Aeademy of Fine Arts at Antwerp. and also studied in France and Italy, at the same time writing illustrated articles for Ameriean periodicals. During the Russo-Turkish War (1877-78) due was engaged by the New York Herald and London Doily as war corre spondent, attached to General Skobeleff's staff. Ile was director of the decorations of the World's Fair at Chicago, where lie also reeeived a medal. The year 1898 saw him in the Philippines as the correspondent of the London Times and Harper's ireekly.

Millet made his home in the village of Broad way. Woreestershire, He is hest known as a painter of genre subjects of England in the eighteenth century and of classic and Greece, in \Which costume and interiors are studied with much detail, showing the influence of the Dutch school. Ilis chief paintings include

the decorations of Trinity Chureh, Boston; "At the Inn," [Mon League Club, New York City; "A Corner," Aletropolitan Museum; tween Two Fires," NatMnal Gallery of British Art, Loudon. Ile is :t member of the Soeiety of American Artists (1880), the „National Acad emy of Design (1885), and the Institute of Paint ers in Oil Colors. London; received a second medal at the Paris Exposition of Is89: and holds several military orders. His literary works include a translation of Ttdstoi's scbastopo/ (1889) ; Capillary Crime and Other Storics (1S92); Thi Danube ( 189S).
