MOLYNEUX, mill'inirks, WILLIAM ( 1656 An Irish philosopher and author, born in Dublin. lie graduated at Trinity College, Dub lin, in 1675; studied law at the Middle Temple, London, in 1675-78; published a translation 116801 of Descartes's Meditationeg de Prinut Philosophic ( and in 1683 assisted in founding the Dublin Philosophical Society. In 1680-90. owing to the disturbances attending Tyrconnel's government. he resided in Chester, England, where he wrote the major part of his Thoptrica :Vora: .1 Treatise of Dioptrics (1692), which long continued to be the most im portant work on the subject. Front 1692 until his death he represented Dublin University in the Irish Parliament. lle published in 1698 his Case of Ireland Mater], in Relation to its Bring /bound by Acts of Parliament Made in England (108), his best-known work. in which lie sought to prove the independence of the Irish Parlia ment. and which evoked much discussion. His further writings include Seiotherieum Trlcseo pieunm (16861, describing "a new contrivance of adapting a telescope to a horizontal dial."
The philosophical society of which he was a founder was dissolved in 1688, and later suc ceeded by the Royal Irish Academy.

Ile wrote, besides this poem, son nets. burlesques, romance., elegies, and epigrams, His complete works, under the title Poesie rot gori r iotine, were published in 1747-54. His granddaughter, TARQUINIA „t01.7.. ( 1542-1607), was also a poet. Several of her poems have been printed with the works of her grandfather.
