MILES, NELSON APPLETON 1839—). An American soldier, born at Westminster. Mass. Ile was engaged in mercantile pnrsuits in Boston between 1856 and 1861. In September, 1861, he was commissioned captain of the Twenty-second Massachusetts Infantry; in May, 1862, he became lieutenant-colonel of the Sixty-first New York Volunteers, and participated in the Peninsular campaign and the battle of Antietam. In Sep tember. 1862, he was promoted to be colonel of volunteers. Ile served in the battle of Fred ericksburg, was wounded at Chancellorsville. and took part in the campaign before Richmond in 1864. lle was commissioned brigadier-general of volunteers :11ay 12. 1864, and was brevetted major-general of volunteers in August, 1864, for gallantry at the battle of Reams's Station. On October 21, 1865, he was commissioned major general of volunteers; in July, 1866, be was ap pointed colonel, Fortieth Infantry, Regular Army; and on March 2, 1867, lie was brevetted brigadier and major-general, U. S. A., for brav ery at CbaWceflorsciIle and Spottsylvania. Dur ing the succeeding years General Miles's chief service was against the Indians in the West. In 1875 he defeated the Cheyenne, Kiowa. and Co manehe tribes, and in 1876 the Sioux and Nez Peres in Alontana: and in 1886 lie made a eam paigm against the Apaches and compelled their ehiefs, hironimo and Natchez, to surrender. this service he received the thanks of the legis latures of Kansas. Montana, New Mexico. and Arizona. in 1890•91 be suppressed sonic Indian outbreaks in South Dakota. In 1880 he was commissioned a brigadier-general. In 1890 Ile became a niajor-generala and on the retirement of General Schofield. in 1895. lie became the com manding general of the army. During the strike riots of 1894 in Chicago he commanded the United States troops, and later visited the swell(' of the Gra-co-Turkish War. and in 1:897 he represented the United States Army at Queen Vietoria's .Imhi lee. During the war of 1898 against Spain he directed in person the oceupation of Porto Vivo. Within a period of two weeks the entire western part of the island was cleared and the Spanish forces defeated. The tidal loss of the Americans was only four killed and forty wounded. lie was raised to the rank of lieutenant-general in Febrn ary, 1901, in pursuance of an net of Congress of June 6, 1900.
