Munielt has no churches of great fame, The Ludwigskirche is a rather attractive example of Italian Renaissance, and contains a noteworthy Last Judgment by Cornelius. -The Saint Boniface basilica, dating from 1850, with some three seore of gray marble columns, is also worthy of men tion, as are the eathedral—the Frauenkirehe the Gothic Alariahilfkirehe, and the Gothic (lie singer Church. The synagogue is one of the larg est and finest in Germany. All these elmrches, except the cathedral, belong to the nineteenth century. Among the impressive secular build ings are the War Office, the Post 011iee, and the new Gothic Bathaus. an attractive building com pleted in 1871.

The picture and seulpture collections of Alit nich are 111111011.4. The building of the Old Pinakothek. situated in northern section of the city, nut far from the royal palace. was constructed in 1821;.3G, in the Renaissance style. It is about 171 yards long. and is embellished on the exterior by statues by Schwanthaler. The Bavarian National founded in 1855, and housed in a fine edifice. is of great value. Among its numerous collections covering I11:1 113' departments of human endeavor, the most able perhaps are the art %Yorks of the mon:twill Renaissance and modern periods. The Schwan I haler Museum eontains models of the works. .\ noteworthy picture collection also is the Selmek :allery. ehoiee and interesting copies of the great masters by many of foremost modern painters. The National Theater is one of the most inumrtant of modern operatici11 being intimately identified with the \Vaguer and tradition.

Among the monuments not Id tioned are those .if Louis I., Schiller. Gluck. Swindling, Eramilnifer, G:irtner: the large and striking monument to \la ximilian II.. dating from the tim' statue of Elector I.. after plans by Thorualdsen ; an obelisk made mf the metal of vaptored cannon, and erected to the memory of the Bavarian soldiers who died in the war with Russia; the fine monument to Liebig, the chemist ; the new and splendid Wit telsbach fountain; also the bronze 1ischbrunmcn, associated with the Festivals. The Church of Saint Alichael contains a fine monu ment by Thorwahlsen to Eugene Beauliarnais. The Siege-thor—Gate of in 1S43 in honor of the Bavarian Army, is a splen did arch patterned after that of Constantine at Rome. It is surmounted by a lingo figure of Bavaria. I111 the magnificent Kiinigsplatz, near the I nyptothek, rises the Propyhea, an attractive portal completed with Doric and Ionic features in tribute to the cause of Greek pendence. Notable also is the ancient Isarthor, with elaborate frescoes. Still other objects worthy of visit in Munich are the Bronze dry and the Royal Arsenal, with an interesting military 01mseuin, containing relies of the Na poleonic wars.
